Origin and Source of the Ngọc Linh Ginseng Medicinal Herb

Since ancient times, the Ngọc Linh ginseng plant has been highly treasured by the Xơ Đăng ethnic people in Tu Mơ Rông District, Kon Tum Province. They called it the "hidden medicine" (thuốc giấu) and considered it a sacred gift from Giàng (the Sky God), used to restore health and treat illnesses. The unique soil and climate conditions of the Central Highlands of Vietnam have given rise to this high-quality ginseng, rich in saponins. It has been recognized by the medical community as a "miracle herb" and honored as a “Vietnamese national treasure.” Ngọc Linh ginseng’s most outstanding effect is its ability to strengthen the immune system and enhance disease resistance. According to research conducted by the Ministry of Health since 1978, Ngọc Linh ginseng contains up to 84 saponin compounds, significantly more than other ginseng varieties worldwide. Notably, 26 of these saponins are unique and not found in any other type of ginseng. Among them, the MR2 saponin, which acts like a natural antibiotic, accounts for nearly half of the total saponin content. It has been proven to help prevent the development of cancer cells, boost the immune system, and reduce side effects from chemotherapy and radiation therapy — improving the overall physical condition. Because of these exceptional properties, Ngọc Linh ginseng is considered a precious medicinal herb with extremely high economic value. It is often likened to a "heavenly gem" from the Ngọc Linh mountains. The process of harvesting seeds and cultivating the plant is a challenging task, undertaken by ginseng growers beneath the ancient forest canopy at altitudes of around 2,000 meters above sea level.
